A History of the Texas Rose Festival…Ninety Years in the Making
OUR FEATURED SPEAKERS

Tom Brown and Liz Ballard
Past Rose Festival President and Current Executive Director Texas Rose Festival
The first Tyler Rose Festival was organized by the Tyler Garden Club members, local rose growers and the Chamber of Commerce in October 1933 for the purpose of focusing attention on the importance of the rose industry to Tyler, and to showcase the town’s elegance. It was renamed the Texas Rose Festival during the Texas Centennial in 1936.
Tom Brown, a past president of the Texas Rose Festival and Liz Ballard, longtime Executive Director of the Texas Rose Festival will talk about the history of the Texas Rose Festival and it’s more than 90 years of festivities. For years Smith County grew more than 50% of the rose bushes for sale in the country. Many of the office headquarters remain in Smith County but now roses are grown also in Latin America and California. They will not only tell us about the Texas Rose Festival and its history but also fill us in on some intriguing, fascinating and surprising stories. The talk promises to be educational, inspirational and funny. Here’s a little-known fact, The Rose Queens dress from 1962 is in Washington DC in the Smithsonian, because of the uniqueness in the making of the costume.
The Texas Rose Festival is a three-day event held annually in Tyler, Texas, and celebrates the role of the rose-growing industry in the local economy. The festivities, taking place during the third week in October, draw thousands of tourists to the city each year. So, ladies, mark your calendars to attend the Texas Rose Festival this October.
